Screw Piles Calgary, Installation Services

What are Screw Piles?

Screw piles or helical piles are a steel ground anchor that are used for foundations. Consisting of a steel pipe with a helix on one end, screw piles are installed by turning the helix into the soil like a screw. When installed correctly screw pile foundations don’t disturb the soil. And unlike concrete footing, provide a building foundation that can be built on immediately after they have been put in. Contact us to learn more about how you can use screw piles for your project.

How are your screw piles installed?

To install screw piles we use a specialized drive head attached to a small skid steer. The drive heads we use are specifically designed to install screw piles. Proper installation is done by turning the helix of a screw pile into the ground using high torque while maintaining a slow speed. The slow rotation of the helix through the soil maintains the least amount of disturbance to the soil, maximizing foundation stability. The piling is turned into the earth like a screw until satisfactory torque and depth is achieved.

How deep do screw piles need to go?

When using screw piles for a foundation in Calgary we start with a 10′ long pile. Screw piles are installed until the required depth and applied torques are achieved. If these engineered requirements are not met at this depth, then extensions are use until the helix reaches solid soil.

Frost jacking also known as frost heaving is a common issue for foundations in regions with colder climates. Due to the long and cold winters that we experience in the Calgary region, shallow foundations are prone to this issue. Because we are starting with a 10′ pile, we can ensures that the helix of the piles go far deeper than the frost line. Doing so prevents the occurrence of frost heaving from happening.

How large is your installation machine?

The skid steer that is used to install screw piles for decks and sheds is 36″ wide and is on rubber tracks. This machine can access most residential yards in Calgary. And in dry conditions our machine can be used on grass with minimal impact to your landscaping.

Do you need a utility locate to have a screw pile foundation installed in Calgary AB?

A large part of our process is safety. Ensuring the safety of our crews, our customers and the neighborhoods we work in is our top priority. We require a valid Alberta One-Call utility locate be done before our crews arrive on site to perform pile installation. Alberta One-Call locates are FREE and required under The Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code, the Alberta Electrical Utility Code and the Alberta Pipeline Regulation.

Does Alberta One-Call locate all of the utilities?

Alberta One-Call only locates the underground lines owned by the utility companies. Any private lines owned by the property owner will need to be located by a Private Line Locator. These line locators will flag: water lines running past the water valve, sewer lines and any power or gas lines running to secondary buildings like garages, shed and shops. Having all utilities located prior to having screw piles installed is the responsibility of the property owner.

How far do screw piles need to be from the utility lines?

Piles must be installed a minimum of one meter away from any underground utility line. If a screw pile is to be located within one meter of a utility, that line must be exposed by an approved method so it can be visibly seen by the screw pile installer.

How long are utility locates valid for?

Alberta One-Call utility locates are valid for 30 days. We cannot provide screw pile installation outside of this 30 day period. Home owners and screw pile contractors are no longer covered by the insurance o the line locator if a locate ticket is expired. If your utility line locate has expired you will need to reapply for a new ticket before your screw piles can be installed.
